AMHERST – RCMP in Cumberland County are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads as the area experiences freezing rain.

Staff Sgt. Al Carroll of the Cumberland RCMP said officers have been responding to numerous collisions in the county.

"There are four or five out there in various areas right now. We have some on the 104 and some on the secondary roads," Carroll said. "People need to be very careful on the highways right now."

Freezing rain is expected to give way to periods of rain this afternoon as the temperature climbs to 4 C. Rain will continue on Thursday with a high of 11 C.

The area is presently under a wind warning with southwesterly winds gusting to 90 km/h tonight and Thursday. Gusts over the Tantramar Marsh are expected to be as strong as 110 km/h.

Transportation is urging drivers of  high-sided vehicles to use extra caution on the highway between the border and Exit 3.
