Union president Peter McInnis says the strike went ahead with no last minute contact with the administration at the school located in Antigonish, N.S.
McInnis says pickets have gone up at five locations around the campus and will work in four shifts between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
He says the strike action was a last resort after eight months of contract negotiations.
The faculty association has been without a contract since June and McInnis says it can’t accept the university’s latest offer because the raises on the table are well below the cost-of-living.
A school spokeswoman has confirmed in an email that the strike has prompted the university to postpone classes.
