AMHERST – She said her final farewell in her pajamas. Evva Williams, one of the childcare workers at the Bright Beginnings Child Care Center, said her final good bye Friday afternoon.
“I’ve been in this field for 35 years and been working here for 32,” said Williams. “It’s been amazing.”
After her many years of service at the centre, Williams said it was time to take her leave. She said her muscles and bones were telling her it was time to retire.
“I’m getting too old to chase toddlers,” she said.
Williams had contemplated retiring several years ago when one of her friends decided to retire but changed her mind. She said her husband wanted her to retire at 60 but she was determined to stay for a few more years.
“I told him no, that I was going to wait until I was 65,” she said.
Mary Porter, the center’s assistant director, has worked with Williams for many years. She said the center and the children are really going to miss her.
“If you ever want to know something, everyone will tell you to go ask Evva,” she said. “Today, we’re having a pajama party, which was her favourite thing to do, so the kids can celebrate with her.”
Porter said Williams was always someone the workers at the center could count on for creative ideas to entertain the children and the kids always loved them.
“She has a box for everything she ever does. I’d say she’s probably one of the most enthused and joyful people,” she said. “She loves the children and they love her.”
Friday may have been Williams’ last day, but it certainly wont be the last time Williams will visit the centre. Bright Beginnings Child Care Center is planning on holding an open house on Feb. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Williams said she’s planning to be in attendance.
“We’re hoping that some of the people she’s worked with will come and share in the excitement,” said Porter.
