1,700 fixtures by July

AMHERST – LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. has signed a contract to 1,700 streetlights in Sudbury, Ont. to LED.

Located approximately 440 km north of Toronto, Sudbury is the largest city in Northern Ontario, with a population of more than 180,000.

The award comes on the heels of the City of Greater Sudbury Council approving a project to convert 1,315 high pressure sodium fixtures to LED in order to take advantage of Greater Sudbury Hydro's Street Light Conversion Incentive Program approved by the Ontario Energy Board.

Greater Sudbury Hydro  Plus Inc., on behalf of the City of Greater Sudbury, conducted a tendering process which included commercial and technical evaluation components. The tender was awarded to Guillevin International, who will supply the LED street light fixtures to GSHPI.

The current award calls for the supply of approximately 1,700 fixtures before July. GSHPI had previously installed approximately 500 LED fixtures in various locations throughout the city.

The City of Greater Sudbury will study this sampling strategy closely with the notion of anticipation to convert  all existing high pressure sodium street lights in the city to LED technology over a 10-year period.

With more than 14,000 streetlights in the city, energy savings of 61 per cent will be achieved. In addition to the energy and maintenance savings that will result, a complete conversion to LED will provide greenhouse gas reductions of approximately 1,552 tons per year

I was listening to Jeff's commentary on 107.9 recently when he was praising this company's performance and how our provincial government was backing them financially so they can increase their business and profile. One of his last comments was the bigger they get the more attractive they will be for a larger company to be interested in. The statement "Be carefull what you wish for" sure comes to mind here for me. Remember the industrial park of yesteryear and a few former tennants that were there. As soon as they were bought out or government money dried up away they went!! To India, China or heaven knows where else. All these large foreign companies mandate is build it anywhere but Amherst!! Hopefully LED Roadway Lighting will remain a small player in the market and supply the obviously good and hard wworking people there many years of steady employment. Lets hope we don't see another Playtex, Amherst Woodworking, Aerovox or Venture Lighting in the making!
