Extending the main runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport will send a “ripple of prosperity” across the province, says airport authority president Tom Ruth.
The airport hosted the grand opening of their main runway on Monday morning, with Premier Darrell Dexter, Defence Minister Peter MacKay and HRM Mayor Mike Savage in attendance.
The $28-million project was completed last November, and lengthened the runway from 8,800 to 10,500 feet.
“This will allow cargo freighters to operate throughout the year, and now larger passenger planes can move more goods and people,” Ruth said.
In Nova Scotia fashion, the dignitaries cut a ribbon strung between boxes of lobster to mark the launch.
Transport Canada provided $9 million, the province invested $5 million, and the remaining $14 million was covered by the Airport Authority.
