HALIFAX – Nova Scotia's publicly funded influenza vaccine supply is not affected by Health Canada's temporary stop use order.

"Nova Scotians who received, or plan to receive the publicly funded flu shot can rest assured that it is safe and reliable," said Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief public health officer. "We have been made aware of the situation in other provinces, and continue to be in discussion with our colleagues at the national level."

The temporary stop use order is a precautionary measure by Health Canada. Nova Scotia's supply comes from other, unaffected manufacturers.

People are reminded that the best defence against the flu is to get immunized. Influenza vaccine is free for all Nova Scotians.

Seasonal flu vaccine is available from family doctors, family practice nurses, nurse practitioners and clinics offered by Public Health Services, family practices and workplaces.

While the vaccine is recommended for everyone, it is especially important for people at high risk of complications including seniors, people age six months to five years, Aboriginal Peoples, pregnant women and anyone with chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, asthma and diabetes. This also includes those who live with, or care for, people in high risk groups.
