SPRINGHILL - An 84-year-old Springhill woman's was sexually assaulted Sunday morning in Springhill.
"At approximately 4:30 a.m. members of the Springhill Police Service responded to a complaint of break and enter into a private residence and sexual assault of an 84-year-old female in the Town of Springhill," said Ken Matthews, deputy chief of the Springhill Police Department. "Resources were pooled, and approximately three hours later a 45-year-old male was arrested at a private home in Springhill."
Rumours in Springhill suggest the male was caught after his wallet was found at the scene of the crime, but Matthews said, "I can't confirm or deny that at this point."
Matthews is disgusted by the crime.
"It's heinous, it's terrible, it's revolting," he said. "It's something that, as far as I'm concerned and as far as our department is concerned, and as far as the members of our community are concerned, it's not to be tolerated or accepted in any fashion."
The male who allegedly committed the crime currently lives in the Halifax Metro area but was originally from Springhill, and Matthews said the man has committed previous crimes and is known to police.
Asked if he was living in an institution of some sort in Halifax, Matthews said, "Not that I'm aware of."
It is thought the 45-year-old male and the 84-year-old were not strangers to one another and knew each other on a casual basis.
The male has been charged with Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Break and Enter and Committing Sexual Assault, and Forcible Confinement.
Matthews said the man will attend Provincial Court in Amherst on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. to face the charges.
The victim is under observation at the All-Saints hospital in Springhill.
