Challenges push project back two weeks

The Dominion Public Building will not be ready for occupancy by the town for its September council session next Monday. The project is delayed by about two weeks.

AMHERST – Renovating the Dominion Public Building is taking a little longer than expected.

While the town had originally planned to hold its September council meeting in its new council chambers, the building will not be ready until early October.

“We had a few minor challenges over the summer and we’re about two weeks behind schedule,” Amherst’s director operational services Ben Pitman told council during its September committee-of-the-whole meeting Monday. “We had a few fire code issues and because of that we had to redo some of the work.”

Pitman said the project should be completed by the end of the month or in the first two weeks of October.

“We had to take off some of the gyprock and add some further fireproofing,” he said.

Pitman said the delay and additional work should only have a minimal impact on the $750,000 budget. He expects the project will finish less than 10 per cent over the original budget.

Pitman said the remainder of the project is proceeding as planned. The final tenders for the project were awarded in August, including for gyprock work, HVAC controls and millwork.

At the time, town CAO Greg Herrett said he expected council to hold its September meeting in the Dominion building. However, he indicated there are issues when working with an old building.

Pitman said Monday the building was constructed under much different fire codes than today and workers have had to make a number of adjustments to reflect the newer codes.

Council will hold its regular September council session in the existing chambers in the Confederation Memorial Building. With the municipal election scheduled for October, the town has cancelled its committee-of-the-whole and regular council sessions. The town did the same during the 2008 municipal election.

The new council will be sworn in Nov. 5 in the new council chambers with the first committee-of-the-whole meeting on Nov. 19 and the regular council session on Nov. 26.
