AMHERST – Live entertainment, food, tug of war and a chili cook-off will be the main attraction to the downtown area of Amherst on Oct 5 when the town will host their very first street party. The Downtown Business Advisory Committee met Thursday afternoon at the Amherst Stadium to hammer down a few final details.
“It’ll cater to children, to youth, adults and also our senior population,” said committee member Michel LeBlanc. “We’re so pleased to have the Amherst Ramblers Association on board with us. They‘re going to be operating our beer tent. One of the groups that is going to be performing is a band called ‘Cool Water’. I understand they are a very popular dance band from around here.”
The entertainment is set to run all day long. The mayor and some of the councillors will also be present at the party to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
“Children’s activities will start after supper,” said LeBlanc. “But throughout the day, we’re going to have what we call the ‘The Street Party Financial Chili Challenge’. The banks are going to be slugging it out with one another and you’re going to be able to go to each of them and sample the chili and vote for who you think served up the best.”
The street party is set to run on Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Entertainment, vendors and activities will be up and running all day long. Vendors interested in participating in the party are asked to contact Sharon LeBlanc at 667-7942. LeBlanc said the event is going to showcase local businesses and vendors and in order to reserve a spot, all vendors must get in touch with her in order to participate.
A schedule of the events will be available closer to the event.
