Rockhounders to return to Parrsboro Aug. 17-19

PARRSBORO - Rockhounds will round up in Parrsboro for the annual Nova Scotia Gem and Mineral Show here this weekend, Aug. 17-19.

Now in its 47th year, the show will stick to its tested and true formula this year, according to Cumberland Geological Society chairman Karen Dickinson.

"We're always happy to have new vendors, and we have some new ones this year," she said. "But the format pretty much has to stay the same as far as demos go, because we only have two and a half days to do that."

Preparations for this year's show were coming along great, according to Dickinson, who said Fundy Geological Museum staff are so used to putting it all together that it's like "old hat" to them now.

This year's show will once again feature a wide assortment of vendors, demonstrations, beach walks and more, and a large number of visitors are expected over the three days at the Lions Arena.

"In some ways we don't want to change it, and in other ways we want to offer something new once in awhile too," said Dickinson. "But I'm constantly amazed, being on the floor and talking to people, and finding they are from Moncton, or northern New Brunswick or P.E.I., and that they come expressly to see this show. It's always amazing to me."

One thing that will not be included in this year's show is the official opening ceremony, which Dickinson said was always challenged by the arena's sound system. Instead, they will let the rocks do the talking.

"We decided this year to let the show stand on its own, and see if there's any kind of reaction to that," she said.
