Police respond to four incidents of arson

AMHERST – Amherst Police are investigating four incidents of Arson and attempted Arson, which occurred between June 25 and June 27. 

A garbage bin at the rear area of the Amherst Stadium was set on fire June 26, at approximately 6:30 p.m.  

The Amherst Fire Department was dispatched and extinguished the blaze. There was no significant damage. 

Police also received a report at 11:30 p.m. of three to four females attempting to set fire to the grass at the base of telephone poles on Spring Street. 

A fire was also set at the accessible playground on Beacon Street later that same evening, at approximately 1:15 a.m. A pile of garbage was placed on the sponge matting and set on fire.  The Amherst Fire Department was dispatched and extinguished the fire.  A small area of the sponge matting was damaged.

On the morning of June 27, staff at the Amherst Stadium noticed that someone had attempted to set fire to the portable washroom unit located outside the building next to the skate park.  The damage occurred during the overnight hours of June 26. 

Police responded to all four incidents.  No arrests have been made, however, police are continuing their investigation.
