AMHERST – There will be at least one vacant position on Amherst town council when voters go to the polls in October.
Veteran town councillor Robert Angel announced Monday he will not be seeking re-election in this fall’s municipal election.
“It takes a team effort to manage a town such as Amherst and I am proud to have been part of that team for the past 12 years,” Angel said. “As we approach election time this fall I have given considerable thought to my ability and interest in serving the residents of Amherst for another term.
“This decision has not been made lightly and indeed, without considerable thought. I wish to indicate to council and citizens that I will not be reoffering for a council seat in the election.”
Angel has served on a number of town committees and recently became Amherst’s representative on the L.A. Animal Shelter board. He has also served on the Cumberland Public Libraries board and the Amherst Police Commission.
Angel is the lone member of council not reoffering. Mayor Robert Small has already indicated he will be seeking a second term in office while Deputy Mayor Dale Fawthrop and councillors George Baker, Dave March, Terry Rhindress and Robert Bird have said they are re-offering.
Angel, who served a year as deputy mayor, was first elected to council in 2000. The retired educator and administrator at both St. Charles and R.B. Dickey Elementary said he leaves the office with considerable respect for town staff.
He said the town is in good fiscal shape and said teamwork by council, department heads and staff have helped move the town forward.
