AMHERST – The Amherst Fire Department responded to a vehicle that caught fire Sunday at 2 p.m. on Myrtle Street in Amherst.

The 1993 Dodge pickup truck is owned by Jim Riley and caught fire while he was cutting it apart with a torch.

“I was tearing it apart and putting it in the (waste) bin,” he said. “I was cutting bolts and the dash caught fire.”

Riley said the fire department’s response was quick.

“I should have had my hose hooked up,” he said.

Riley is going to cut the box off the back and make a trailer with the four tires, which were unscathed in the fire.

Riley’s had the truck for six years and said it’s from Alberta.
