AMHERST – The three law enforcement agencies in Cumberland County are joining forces for the third year in a row to promote National Police Week at the Amherst Centre Mall.

“We invite the public to join us in celebrating National Police Week today at the Amherst Centre Mall,” said RCMP const. Dal Hutchinson.

Amherst Town Police and Springhill Town Police will join the Cumberland District RCMP from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hutchinson and Amherst Police Constable Francis Smith, who recently succumbed to cancer, started the event.

“We wanted to do something jointly between the three police agencies in the county,” said Hutchinson. “We do a lot of things together and we wanted to promote it.

There were 35 displays last year, and this year there will be 45.

Specialized policing units will be in attendance, including an RCMP helicopter, Emergency Response, Explosive Disposal, Coastal Watch, the Motorcycle Unit, Mobile Command, and a dog and handler from Corrections.

“If the weather cooperates, the RCMP helicopter lands at 10 a.m. and will be on display until 1 p.m.,” said Hutchinson.

“We want people to come out and see the different specialized units in policing,” said Hutchinson. “We’re not just in the police car stopping vehicles or responding to calls.

“We’re more than that,” he added. “We offer a wide variety of services to the public and we see this as an event that promotes it, whether it’s our bomb disposal unit, to our mobile command unit.”

The Amherst police are going to have their drug recognition expert on hand, and are going to have different items on display.

“And we have a counterfeit expert who is going to be there,” said Hutchinson.

Three different elementary schools will bring their students to the Mall.

“It’ great for them,” said Hutchinson. “Unfortunately, the helicopter couldn’t land last year because of the weather, but the fire department will have a fire truck on display.”

The show is growing every year and Hutchinson has been told it’s one of the biggest displays in the Maritimes.
