AMHERST – Excellence is the best deterrent to racism.
Oprah Winfrey spoke those words of wisdom, and the deterrence of racism will be the focus of the Gospel Celebration Towards the Elimination of Racism Saturday at the Trinity St. Stephens United Church in Amherst.
"In all parts of our great country there are still far too many individuals, communities and societies who continue to suffer from the injustice and stigma that racism brings,” said Elizabeth Cooke Sumbu, who is the executive director of the Cumberland African Nova Scotia Association. “Although racist laws and practices have been abolished in many countries, there still exist the need to build an international framework for fighting racism and this is another approach.”
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21, and Saturday’s gospel celebration features the Nova Scotia Mass Choir, with special performances by James Cole and the Revival Choir and J-Bru, with inspirational speeches by Theresa Halfkenny and Rev. Christine Slaughter.
CANSA is hosting the event, and encourages members of the community of Cumberland to collectively celebrate this event to promote and protect this ideal that people should fight racism together.
