AMHERST – The new area commission for Scouting in Cumberland County wants you.

Tom Somers, the newly-minted head of Scouting in the county, aims to increase the number of Scout members to the record numbers it saw 20 years ago and he’s hoping former Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and anyone else interested in the program will help him do it.

“We’re down on membership. We’d like to focus on that and bring scouting back into the public eye,” he said. “It’s one of my main focuses.”

Some of the new commissioner’s plans include bringing in youth volunteers, increasing public awareness and encouraging young people to join by popularizing events like Bring a Friend Day.

“We like to try to get the word out there that Scouts is still vibrant,” he said.

The dates for Scout registration for both Fenwick and Amherst have been decided.

Registration for both troops, which include Beavers, Wolf Cubs and Scouts will be Sept. 14 between 7 - 9 p.m.

The locations will be Fenwick United Church, and the First Baptist Church in Amherst.

The date for Parrsboro registration will be announced shortly.
