UPPER NAPPAN – Snowmobilers, ATV riders and boaters were all beneficiaries of grants announced by Cumberland County council at its recent June 15 meeting.
The county agreed to provide $5,000 to the Northumberland Boating Association, $2,600 to the Cumberland Trails Association, $2,000 to the Chignecto and Area ATV Club and $2,000 to the Cumberland Snowmobile Club.
While council agreed to the other grant requests, Coun. Ernest Gilbert said towns like Amherst and Parrsboro should also be expected to provide funds.
“Amherst and Parrsboro should be contributing some of this too because they receive a benefit from the tourism these clubs promote,” said Gilbert. “It’s a small amount, but when they all ask for money it gets to be a large amount. To look after the taxpayers’ money, I think we should be emphasizing more where the money is coming from, how it is used and how these trails co-ordinate with each other.”
