RIVER HEBERT - It may have happened more than six decades ago, but students here got a closer look at the reality of the Second World War this week.
Members of the Maritimes World War II Re-enactment Unit visited River Hebert District High School on June 13, offering students in Grades 7-12 the opportunity to envision the contributions and the sacrifices made by communities like theirs between 1939-45.
"Anytime you can make history alive for, especially younger kids, the more it's going to be a factor for them," explained teacher Nick Porter. "Anyone can read it or see a picture of it, but when it's in front of you and you can hold the weapons and hold the clothes, it makes it so much more real for them."
The students paid solemn attention to re-enactor Terry Randall, especially when he plucked 10 students from the crowd and described what they would have faced in the war.
