AMHERST - Hundreds of thousands of pennies later, Joanna Lushman received a standing ovation.
Seven-year-old Joanna, also known as the Penny Girl, made a donation of $3,203.98 to the Relay for Life last Friday night after members of the community dropped off penny after penny.
"It was good," said Joanna of how much she raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Joanna's plight started last year after she made a donation of 2,800 pennies to Daren White, a cancer survivor and Joanna's former physical education teacher. This year, she had wanted to double the donation.
Her goal for next year, she said, is to raise $10,000 in pennies.
Anyone wishing to start making donations can call Denise or Alfred Lushman at 660-2915.
