PORT HOWE - A search for a missing 81-year-old Amherst man was called off at nightfall last night.

Cumberland RCMP Const. Dal Hutchinson said the search crews - which included the Pugwash and Springhill search and rescue teams and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team - exhausted their search from the air, land and water.

The man was reported missing Monday around 2 p.m. His vehicle was found abandoned on the bridge over the River Philip in Port Howe later that evening. It was reported to have been there since about 8 a.m. that same day.

The man, who hasn't been identified at the request of the family, uses a cane or walker for mobility. The walker was still at the man's residence when his wife returned home. The cane was found in the man's car, along with the keys to the vehicle.
