PORT HOWE - A search is underway for a missing Amherst man after a vehicle was found abandoned here Monday.
At 6:01 p.m., Pugwash RCMP received a complaint of the abandoned vehicle on the bridge on Highway 6 in Port Howe. The vehicle was reported to have been at the location since 8 a.m. on Monday.
As a result of an investigation, a search is being conducted in the Port Howe area for an 81-year-old male from Amherst who was reported missing earlier in the day.
The man's wife called the Amherst RCMP at roughly 2 p.m., however the case was turned over to the Amherst Police Department because of the jurisdiction. After the abandoned car was determined to belong to the missing man, the RCMP took over the case.
Ground Search and Rescue teams and RCMP conducted a search of the area throughout the night, and Tuesday's search included roughly two dozen Search and Rescue members from Pugwash and Springhill, three boats, two helicopters and members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team out of Halifax and Cape Breton.
Winds were strong in the area all day Tuesday.
