SPRINGHILL – When the weather outside is frightful the day will remain delightful for Chignecto Central Regional School Board students.
The CCRSB struck down a motion tabled in May 2010 to keep schools open when bussing was cancelled on storm days, saying the support was not there from the public.
After tabling the motion in 2010, the school board issued a survey to parents and stakeholders for their input on keeping schools open on storm days for non-bussed students. More than 6,000 responses came in from across the region with the majority in favour of maintaining the status quo. CCRSB echoed those findings, lifting the motion from the table at its monthly meeting here in Springhill on Wednesday and striking it down. The motion was not defeated unanimously, however.
“There’s been significant disagreement on keeping schools open when busses are not running, but we followed the findings of the survey,” board member Gordon Anderson said.
The question remains how students will make up for lost time when school is cancelled on storm days.
