AMHERST - A 27-year-old man from the Joggins area will spend the next 10 months behind bars after a guilty finding to sex-related offences from when the man was a teenager.
The man, who can't be identified because he was a youth when the incidents occurred, was sentenced to a 15-month custody and supervision order with 10 months being spent in custody and the remaining five on supervision with a number of conditions.
He was given the same concurrent sentence for each count after being charged last year with sexual touching and invitation to sexual touching.
His victim, a niece, was three-years-old when the offences started in the late 1990s. They spanned over three years.
"The child was virtually powerless," said Judge D. Timothy Gabriel in his sentencing. "She had no opportunity to say no and no opportunity to offer resistance to what was being done."
Over the years the incidents occurred, the man admitted in his own words to inviting the child to sexual touching and oral sex. He also admitted to touching the girl.
Along with the custody and supervision order, Gabriel granted a DNA sample order and the man will be placed on the sex offender registry for the next 20 years.
He is also prohibited for the next 10 years from attending a public place where there may be persons under the age of 14 present or expected to be present, or being in a position of trust or authority towards persons under the age of 14 years.
