AMHERST - Stepan Chubukov wants his daughter to finally get married and is willing to go to any lengths.
Chubukov, played by Frank Allen during The Proposal at Tantramar Theatre next week, is excited to learn his neighbour, Ivan Lomov (played by Corey Janes) comes by with a marriage proposal.
"The Proposal is set in 19th century Russia, so at that time, girls were around 17 or 18 when they married," said Beverly True who is directing the Brown Bag Theatre production.
True said Chubukov's daughter, Natalya (Marlene Hebert), is getting to the age where she may be too old for the marriage market.
"Immediately, the two characters, Natalya and Lomov, get into an argument about property and who owns what. They continue to argue about things and Natalya realizes Lomov comes to propose," True added.
Bette Douglas, who runs Tantramar Theatre, said the Brown Bag Theatre productions are a good chance for new actors to come into the scene, including Hebert who is making her stage debut.
"The Brown Bag Theatre is very popular with the audiences," said Douglas. "With veterans such as Corey and Frank, whom the audiences know and love, it's exciting to introduce new actors."
The Proposal runs March 3 and 4, with the show beginning at 12 p.m. Bambino's will be providing the lunch.
