AMHERST - It's all about accomplishing something you thought you couldn't.
Over the past six weeks, Kim and Devin Kierstead have been motivating each other through an eight-week weight Lisa challenge.
At the start of the Eliminate the Weight challenge through the Cumberland YMCA, the husband and wife team wanted to lose 20 pounds each. Now, they have each surpassed that goal and are hoping to lose an additional 10 before the program is finished.
At the last weigh-in, they each lost five-and-a-half pounds.
"At the beginning of the program, I thought it would be a struggle to lose 20," said Kim, noting she's almost there.
"I am half a pound away from having lost 30," added Devin. "I was hoping for 30, but didn't think I could do it."
For the most part, the Kiersteads have stuck to a routine schedule each week, however they knew they would have to add something new every once in a while.
"We tried Roger Dorrington's boot camp last summer and I left crying," said Kim. "I felt like a lumbering moose in a room full of gazelles. I felt awkward."
Kim said it was because the majority of the participants were smaller than her 300+ pound self.
But that changed when the couple arrived early one night to the Y for their usual Monday night Zumba class.
"It was all sizes," she said. "They were real people in there."
Along with boot camp, Kim and Devin started going to cyclefit classes.
"We needed to kick it up," said Devin.
"And I wanted to see how far I can push my body."
As an instructor at the Y, Laura Coleman has seen the progress the Kiersteads have made since the challenge started and said they are doing a great job.
"They are here all day, every day. I see them all the time," said Coleman.
"They're trying new things," Coleman said in reference to the cyclefit class in particular for Kim.
"Before the challenge, Kim may not have had the confidence to try the cyclefit class, but they are doing more intense workouts now."
Coleman said it's unbelievable how much confidence they each have now.
"They kind of feed off each other. They seem happy and I'm noticing a difference in them."
