DILIGENT RIVER - It's all about tradition when it comes to trimming the tree for Mary and Ann Kernohan when they visited Michael Fuller's Christmas tree U-cut on Dec. 18 to pick out their family tree.
Fuller has been operating the u-cut in Diligent River for 30 years and Ann has been part of that tradition for the last 12 of those years.
"If you went out and bought a pre-cut tree you wouldn't get that old-time experience of hiking through the woods, picking out a tree and chopping it down yourself," Ann Kernohan said as she hiked through the couple of acres of Fuller's tree lot with 10-year-old daughter Mary.
Fuller explained that it takes roughly eight to 10 years for a Christmas tree to fully mature and that yearly pruning of the 300-400 trees is necessary to provide nice full, well-shaped trees for people to choose from.
Over the past number of years, Fuller has noticed that he would previously sell anywhere from 75-100 trees but the trend seemed to have gone plastic and sales have dropped to about 40 trees a year.
Kernohan said it was the total experience of the day that has her and her daughter returning to Fuller's U-cut each year.
"You can't beat the two-kilometer drive in off the highway. The scenery is beautiful, that combined with the experience of walking through the woods, choosing and cutting down your own tree. You can't beat the experience," Ann said.
"It's fun, I like the tradition," 10-year-old Mary said.
After walking through the woods for close to an hour, the Kernohans decided on a tree that wasn't too tall, or too short, too bushy or too small. The Kernohans had found the tree perfect for them.
Fuller handed the saw to Mary, who then with Fuller's assistance cut down their Christmas tree. After loading the tree into their vehicle, Mary was hopeful to get the tree home and decorated.
Fuller's Christmas tree U-cut lot is always open and is located at 9874 Highway 209 and to make sure Fuller is available you can call ahead at 254-2972.
