PARRSBORO – After two days of searching, RCMP and a team of ground search and rescue volunteers are still hopeful of finding 87-year-old hunter Harris Hill alive.

Hill is in good shape and is an experienced “woodsman,” according to Const. Laurie Haines, incident commander at the scene of the search effort in the West Bay area on Friday morning.

“We’re optimistic, given that he’s an experienced woodsman and experienced hunter, and formally trained by the military in survival skills,” said Haines. “So, on that basis, we’re progressing. We’re still hopeful. The weather has certainly been in our favour, he has the skills… so there are a lot of things favourable right now.”

Hill, who lives in Parrsboro, was last seen when he had lunch with his family on Wednesday, after which he left to tend some apples he had placed to bait deer, and to hunt for the afternoon. When he did not return home by evening, his son found his truck in the area about 3 km west of Parrsboro, and immediately called 911 when he discovered he was not with his vehicle.

Police and searchers were on the scene by around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and have been searching ever since. They located the area where he had been placing the apples, but had turned up no other leads as of 11 a.m. Friday.

“It’s a very large search area, and obviously we’re concentrating our efforts in and around where his vehicle was and where the apples were, but we’ve expanded out a fair distance all the way around it,” said Haines.

Joining RCMP in the search were ground search and rescue teams from across Nova Scotia, as well as New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, totaling about 90 people, as well as a Department of Natural Resources helicopter and several dog units.

Hill was last seen wearing blue jeans, a brown hat and either a red plaid or camouflage jacket.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the RCMP at 1-800-272-9569.
