FIVE ISLANDS – There is something majestic, even artistic, to the natural lay of the land at Five Islands and musician Ryan MacGrath will bring that wonder to a larger audience when the music video for his single Gift Horse is released later in the year.
MacGrath and a troop of musicians and videographers boarded a boat bound for Long Island on Friday, where they stayed at Dick Lemon’s retreat to combine the islands natural beauty with MacGrath’s music.
“The song is about taking things for granted; friends, lovers, nature. It’s pretty simple at the essence of it. It kind of went with the theme of an island. All of us rely on landscape and scenery.”
A two-time veteran of enjoying the island retreat to create music and art, MacGrath says he finds the Five Islands as remarkable as his the first time he visited and hopes audiences will get a glimpse of that inspiration from his video.
“I was stunned. First off the community is beautiful in itself and then the island – it’s surreal going out there. The best way I can describe it, it’s like Jurassic Park. It’s ancient.”
In tow with MacGrath for the island adventure included band mates Mark Bachynski, Mike Ritchie and filmmaker Pardis Parker, whose first film, Afghan, won best short film as the 2009 ViewFinders International Film Festival. Meeting at Mo’s Café after foraging at a grocery store for their weekend stock, a boat captained by Rodger Hunter was loaded with guitars, drums and keyboards as the watchful eye of the video camera documented it all for prosperity. With a wave to the shore, the crew made their way to the mysterious island and the story of weekend will not be revealed until the video editors prepared to release Gift Horse to the masses.
Gift Horse is currently in rotation as what MacGrath calls a “soft single” for his upcoming album Cooper Hatch Paris. When the album is officially released in September, Gift Horse and its video will go into greater prominence, bringing the allure of Five Islands along for the ride.
