AMHERST - Prohibited weapons have been recently sold in the Amherst area.

The RCMP is looking to recover approximately six crossbows that were sold in the area that could see the owner prosecuted under the Firearms Act.

The Cumberland District RCMP said the crossbows, which are under 19 inches in length and designed to be operated by one hand, were sold as an honest mistake on the seller's part.

Because of the length and operation design, the crossbows are prohibited weapons and their possession is illegal.

Three dozen units in total were sold in the area, and RCMP have since destroyed 30. They're still looking for the additional six units.

Anyone in possession of a prohibited weapon is subject to prosecution under the Firearms Act, however since the sales were made in error, the RCMP at this time are asking for the crossbows to be brought to the detachment to avoid future prosecution.

Anyone with information can contact the RCMP at 667-3859, or visit the detachment at 39 Highway 6 in West Amherst.
