Midget A girls win provincials making Cumberland County hockey history

AMHERST – Cumberland County Community Credit Union midget A girls made hockey history Sunday when they took the provincial championship game 2-0 against South Shore.

“We are the first female team out of Cumberland County to ever go to provincials and the first to win provincials,” said coach Chuck Linney. “It was a long hard road. The girls worked hard. They were well prepared, they knew what they had to do and they went out on the ice and did it.”

Team captain Alyson Pickard was selected tournament all star forward and tournament Most Valuable Player.

Out of six available awards for skill competition the Cumberland County team claimed three. Pickard - top puck handler, Jennifer Hollis – best goaltender and Alex Hicks was the shootout winner.

The first game of the tournament was a loss against Shelburne 3-2.

“That first game was disheartening, we were down two goals going into the third period, we came back and tied them only to lose seven seconds into overtime,” Linney said.

Saturday morning the potted a 4-2 win against Western Valley, another win followed that game when the Cumberland County team beat South Shore 1-0. 

Sunday morning the Cumberland County team won 7-1 against Glace Bay before facing off against the South Shore team in the championship game.
