TRURO – The Truro & Colchester Chamber of Commerce will host candidates' debates covering all three local ridings during the provincial election campaign.

The first pair of debates will take place at the Truro Fire Hall in Truro on Sept. 24. They were originally to take place at the Marigold Cultural Centre but had to be moved due to a schedulling conflict.

Colchester North candidates Karen Casey (Liberal), John K. MacDonald (Progressive Conservative) and Jim Wyatt (New Democratic Party) will discuss the issues from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A second debate involving Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River candidates Lenore Zann (NDP), Charles Cox (PC) and Barry Mellish (Liberal) will be held between 8 and 9 p.m.

On Sept. 26, the Stewiacke Legion will be the site of the Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley debate between Gary Burrill (NDP), Larry Harrison (PC) and Tom Martin (Liberal). Start time is 7 p.m.

"These debates are a chance for everyone to know where the local candidates and their parties stand on the issues that affect Colchester County and the province as a whole," said chamber of commerce president Don Hay in a news release.

The chamber's executive director Alan Johnson will host and moderate the debates. He has a background in political journalism, and has covered events in a number of Canadian legislatures.

The chamber of commerce will be soliciting questions from chamber businesses as well as the general public until noon on Sept. 23.

Advance questions can be sent to execdirector@trurocolchesterchamber.com

The debates are open to the public. Voters who plan to attend must submit their questions to the moderator in advance. Those questions can be sent to execdirectortrurocolchesterchamber.com.

A two-minute introduction and one- minute closing statement will be permitted for each of the participating candidates.
