PUGWASH - Allison Gillis is returning to Cumberland County council for four more years, this time without a fight. Gillis was one of four councilors re-elected by acclamation last month, when his nomination for the seat was unopposed. He and fellow returnees Ernest Gilbert, John Kellegrew and Ratchford Merriam will watch with interest as the six remaining seats are up for grabs in the Oct. 20 vote. Gillis said the acclamation makes it easier for him right now, but that he would miss seeing the people he would normally meet during a campaign. "I feel it's a vote of confidence, that's the way I look at it," he said, regarding his re-election. "I've enjoyed working for the people the last four years, I've met a lot of fine people and attended many meetings, and I have to say most were productive. We have a couple of projects on the go in Pugwash and area right now that I'm hoping to see through within the next period of time." The county has been working towards a new central water system for the Pugwash area, and that project remains a high priority for Gillis, as does the new combined library and community centre also in the works. Both projects are part of council's Pugwash Master Plan, along with a new marina, which has not seen as much progress, he admitted. "There are a couple of smaller arenas here, but not full-service marinas, by any means," said Gillis. "We are working on getting dual fuel service for pleasure boaters, which now have to carry their fuel." While he said he was glad to see the renovations to the main Thinkers Lodge building completed during his first term, he said completion of the lobster factory is expected soon, and will be an added bonus for local community groups. As for new projects in his area, he said roads are high on his list. "It's a provincial concern but at the municipal level we can advocate for roadwork, repairs and upgrades," said Gillis. "We do that actively, and that's all we can do is put pressure on the our MLA and the provincial government. There are so many retired people in this area that have built beautiful homes, like on Gulf Shore Road and in Malagash. They were promised a new road there next year, but we have to keep them to that promise."
