AMHERST – The daughter of former mayor Ray Emery has announced her intention to seek a seat on Amherst town council.

Lisa Emery, the chair of the Amherst police commission, confirmed Thursday her name will be on the ballot in October.

“My main concerns are the continued economic development of the area including tourism, commercial and retail development,” the 47-year-old Amherst native said. “I would also like to work with council to help provide a solution to the long-term sustainability of the town, including the high cost of policing.”

Emery has taken a leadership role with many community volunteer projects and activities including the Community Garden on East Pleasant Street, the police commission and the Cumberland Child Advocacy Association.

She has also served on provincial boards including the board of governors for the Nova Scotia Community College and is presently a director with the Nova Scotia Association of Police Boards.

Emery, who also ran in 2008, holds a bachelor of arts from Mount St. Vincent University and a diploma in paralegal studies from the Nova Scotia Community College in Springhill.

“I have the right vision to build a bright and sustainable future for the town,” said Emery, who describes herself as decisive, dependable and very determined. “I can be the change for the future we deserve now. I feel I’m the right person, at the right time, for all the right reasons.

She has also set up a website for her candidacy at http://votelisaemery2012.webs.com.
