GEISMAR, La. — Daniel Cuthbertson knows there are risks involved in work at chemical plants.
Still, the 34-year-old contract worker from Taft, Calif., says he was shaken after escaping Thursday’s blast at a south Louisiana plant that killed at least one worker.
Louisiana’s health department says 77 people were treated at hospitals. Most were released by Thursday evening but a few were in critical condition.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
The plant in a Mississippi River corridor southeast of Baton Rouge makes ethylene and propylene, highly flammable gases that are common to the petrochemical industry.
