CALGARY — The father of a 16-month-old girl who died after ingesting methadone is expected to be sentenced in a Calgary court today.

Jonathan Hope was earlier found guilty of failing to provide his daughter with the necessities of life.

He and the girl’s mother, Lisa Guerin, were both convicted on the charge in the death of their daughter, Summer, in April 2006.

A judge ruled the girl likely drank from a cup used by her father after he took a dose of methadone to wean him off his drug addiction.

Hope’s lawyer successfully requested a psychiatric assessment, arguing her client suffered memory loss, disorganized thoughts and mood instability at the time of the incident.

Last Friday, Hope was found mentally fit to be sentenced.
