ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Curtis McElhinney made 46 saves as the Springfield Falcons defeated the St. John's IceCaps 4-2 in American Hockey League action Saturday night.
Matt Calvert, Cam Atkinson, Ryan Johansen and Tomas Kubalik, with an assist, each scored for the Falcons (14-4-4).
Maxime Macenauer and Paul Postma scored for the IceCaps (11-12-1).
The Falcons had three goals in an explosive second period. The first goal came just 24 seconds into the frame when Calvert found the puck in a scramble in front of the net and slid it past IceCaps starter Mark Dekanich.
Kubalik tipped in the second goal off a powerful point shot from Tim Erixon.
The IceCaps cut the lead eight minutes into the period with a power-play goal. Macenauer jumped on a rebound in the crease from the back post.
The Falcons brought the lead back to two at 14:41 when Atkinson batted his own rebound off Dekanich's chest to score his 13th goal of the season.
St. John's peppered the Falcons with 19 shots in the second, but entered the third behind down two goals just like Friday night's 5-3 loss to Springfield.
Postma gave the IceCaps hope by scoring a rocket one-timer at 14:06 in the third period on the power play.
Springfield sealed the win with a Johansen's empty-netter at 19:34.
Dekanich made 28 saves for the IceCaps.
St. John's power play went 2-for-5 while Springfield was 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
