AMHERST – Power is out to more than 5,000 Cumberland County households this morning after high winds and heavy rains overnight downed power lines in the region.

The storm also caused power outages to some local schools, forcing the closure of classes at West Highlands Elementary and Spring Street Academy in Amherst and at Advocate District School in Advocate.

Early estimates for power restoration range from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The lights are off in and around parts of Amherst, Pugwash, Oxford, Springhill, Parrsboro and Advocate.

The high winds and heaviest rains are forecast to ease this afternoon.
