CHARLOTTETOWN - The federal government will spend $5.4 million on a new greenhouse and work area at a research facility in P.E.I.
The announcement was made Saturday in Charlottetown by Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea.
They ministers say the project at the Harrington facility will create 57 construction jobs.
The initiative will replace aging buildings and enable research on insect populations, plant breeding and health research on plants.
The money comes from Canada's Economic Action Plan, which includes $250 million over the next two years to upgrade federal laboratories across Canada.
The announcement comes during the 100th anniversary year of federal crop and animal research on the Island.
