AMHERST - He may no longer be a member of the Tory caucus, but veteran MP Bill Casey is applauding his former government's cabinet shuffle for what it means to Atlantic Canada.

"I think there are some good moves for Atlantic Canada here," Casey said late Tuesday upon learning which ministers got moved where. "The previous cabinet had too much power centralized in Quebec and Ontario with the minister of defence, the minister of public works and the minister of industry all being from those two provinces."

The shuffle, announced around suppertime, saw Pictou County's Peter MacKay moved from foreign affairs to defence while Jim Prentice has been moved to industry. While not from the Atlantic region, Casey feels Prentice will do more to shift power and lucrative government contracts from central Canada to this region and the west.

"I felt that was a mistake from the beginning (to have all those ministers from central Canada), to not have a better distribution because those three departments control all of the military contracts," Casey said, adding he's happy his former caucusmate will take over the defence portfolio.

As much as he likes the changes made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Casey is not softening his stand against his former party's decision to change the Atlantic Accord. Casey was turfed from the Tory caucus several months ago after voting against the Tory budget.

Former industry minister Maxime Bernier moves over to foreign affairs while Michael Fortier remains at public works. Also of note, Jim Flaherty, who became Casey's foe following his expulsion from caucus, remains in the finance portfolio.
