AMHERST - He's been called a young Bill Cosby, and comedian Evan Carter will be showing audience members in Amherst why.
Carter, who lives in Etobicoke, Ont., will bring his comedy with him as he performs during the Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce's Excellence Awards Gala later this month.
"One member had seen me at a corporate function a few years ago in Moncton, and she thought I'd be perfect for the Chamber of Commerce," Carter said.
Having been labelled a young Bill Cosby by a co-worker, Carter said he uses stuff people can relate to.
"I do stuff on families, things that happen in real life ... that's what I base my humour on," he said.
Starting out as a comedian in college, it's something Carter said he's always loved to do.
"Just the idea of one person on stage doing that, I just enjoy that atmosphere and way to work."
Having performed in front of audiences for more than three decades, Carter said it's the pieces involving kids and other family members that get the laughs the most.
"Everyone's either dated, is married or divorced, or in some form of that type of relationship, so it is something everyone can relate to."
Over the years, Carter has been able to work with a number of well-known musicians.
He's opened in front of 8,000 people for Marvin Gaye, and has worked with Air Supply, Gladys Knight, and the Temptations.
He's also had dinner with B.B. King and Aretha Franklin.
"All those things are not only memorable, but I've learned something from each and every one of them and I've taken that along with me to get me where I am today," said Carter.
"I get to have fun at work doing something that I love and that's pretty special."
The awards gala takes place on Oct. 22, and more information can be obtained through the Chamber's website at www.amherstchamber. ca.
