AMHERST - Break out your brooms and sliders, and hurry hard.
Curl for Cancer will take to the ice the weekend of Oct. 23 at the Amherst Curling Club.
"Fun is the main aspect of this, and we'd like to turn it into sort of an extension to the Relay for Life event with themes and charisma," said Terri Lewis, the chair of the organizing committee.
"We're hoping to bring in some new curlers, as well as old."
The event, which raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, has been held at various locations throughout the province over the past few years and Sharon Bristol, the Canadian Cancer Society Northern Region co-ordinator, said it was time to bring it to the area.
"It's an opportunity to continue to create awareness and what people can do to fight cancer," she said. "And it's an opportunity to bring us together in community spirit and increase our fundraising efforts."
"It promotes a healthy lifestyle too," said committee member Sharon Duffy.
Other committee members include Jo-Ann Sigut, Charmaine Miller and Cheryl Smith.
Registration is $60 per team, with four members per team.
While the committee doesn't necessarily have a financial goal set for the first year, they are asking each team to fundraise $200 beyond that registration fee.
"Some teams might do a little bit of fundraising, and some might do a lot," she said, adding all money raised will go toward research, prevention initiatives, and information and support services.
Prizes will be awarded for best team theme and top fundraising team. There will also be draws and a raffle for a painting and prints by local artist and former curler Ginny Chapman.
Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or three for $5, and can be purchased from committee members in advance or during that weekend.
During the weekend, information will be available at a cancer aware table, where visitors will learn ways to prevent cancer, what programs are available through the Canadian Cancer Society and possibly about things they hadn't been aware of.
To register, call Jo-Ann Sigut at 667-8233, or visit www.cancer.ca.
For more information or to pick up tickets for the raffle, contact Terri Lewis at 661-0915.
