LONDONDERRY - This community's 'Thirsty Church' continues to soak up the votes in an Internet contest offering the potential to win funding for community improvements.
The Londonderry Station Community Church now is the only Nova Scotia entry remaining in the nationwide Aviva Community Fund, a contest provided as an opportunity for Canadians to initiate positive change by creating an idea that will have an impact in their home communities.
"And that is huge," said Amanda Langille, of the church's position in the contest. "So we have more support now than what we had since the competition started and really it's become a lot more than a contest. It's reconnecting our community and it's almost become like a story of inspiration for other small, rural communities who are really looking to breathe some renewed energy and direction into what they have."
Langille is a Londonderry resident whose grandparents helped construct the church in 1949. She was also the person who entered the church into the competition in the hope of generating funding to make the facility wheelchair accessible, have water installed and finish the basement so it can be used for community functions.
A total of $500,000 is available through a variety of categories, including a $10,000 prize for a small-sized idea, $10,000 to $50,000 for a medium-sized idea and $50,000 to $250,000 for a large idea.
A discussion board on the contest website shows that voting support is coming from such areas as New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and other areas across the country, through people who have past connections to the community.
On Sunday, voting ends on the current round of the contest, after which 60 entries will move into the semifinals.
"The awareness and the interest that has been generated for the contest, I think only good things can come from it," she said.
But, first things first and, for now, Langille has her sights set on winning the grand prize of $250,000 to bring the church up to modern-day standards.
And, for that, she needs your vote. Participants can vote daily. To get to the website, Google the thirsty church.
