HALIFAX - Residents across HRM are in for a summer of swordfights, astronauts, beauty pageants and football as the Outdoor Film Experience is set to bring thousands of movie lovers out of the house and under the stars.

On Wednesday, the Atlantic Film Festival announced its lineup for the 14th annual series of free outdoor films, including five Sandra Bullock hits at the Halifax waterfront’s Tall Ships Quay for the “Summer of Sandra.”

“We’ve upped our game quite a bit,” said Wayne Carter, the festival’s executive director about the summer’s largest number of screenings at 15.

The “Summer of Sandra” includes Gravity, The Blind Side, Miss Congeniality, and Speed.

Carter said Bullock was in the running a year ago, but hadn’t made that “colossally big film” they wanted to launch the summer until Gravity.

“This is a challenge we have with Hollywood,” Carter said. “There are not a lot of big-star females that basically are at the forefront of … more mainstream blockbuster kind of films.

“Sandra Bullock is the one that’s really changing that.”

Carter said the energy of over 1,000 people laughing and reacting to the same movie is so unique, “you can’t put it into words. You have to experience it.”

The festival’s Rose Zack said it’s “surprisingly challenging” to pick an actor with a career long enough to offer five movies all ages can enjoy, but Bullock is a “star that people love.”

The public can vote on her romantic comedies Two If By Sea, While You Were Sleeping, The Proposal, and Two Week’s Notice for the People’s Choice film on August 15.

Besides the Bullock movies in Halifax every Friday night starting mid-July, Bedford residents will see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, while Despicable Me will play in Sackville. Dartmouth will show Ghostbusters, the Princess Bride, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!

A French-Canadian film will be shown in Grand Parade, while the event’s first “End of Summer” series brings The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Lego Movie, and Frozen to Halifax in September.
