Officials at Confederation Centre of the Arts were notified Friday by Guiness World Records that they have the title.
"We are delighted to confirm that we have successfully achieved a new Guiness World Records title for longest running annual musical theatre production," said centre CEO Jessie Inman.
Inman expressed her appreciation for the efforts expended by the centre's marketing department to assemble the extensive documentation required to meet the criteria set by the Guiness World Records organization for consideration of a new record.
Anne of Green Gables will celebrate its 50th season at the festival this summer.
The production had its official opening night July 27, 1965.
A small sketch was performed for Queen Elizabeth II during the centre's opening ceremony in October of 1964.
That prompted the writing of the full-scale musical.
The centre has yet to receive its official certificate of recognition from Guiness World Records, but expects it in the near future.
