Cormier teaming up with Symphony Nova Scotia for May 10 show

TRURO - J.P. Cormier and Symphony Nova Scotia are coming to town in May for a fundraising event.

J.P. Cormier will perform in Truro at CEC on May 10 in the Hootenanny for Hospice fundraiser for the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society. Cormier's backing band for the night will be Symphony Nova Scotia. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Hootenanny for Hospice will feature the award-winning musician performing with the symphony on May 10 at CEC as a fundraiser for the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society.

"In the past, we've done a comedic event - You'll Die Laughing - and we decided to change it up this year," said Craig Johnson, hospice society fund development co-ordinator. "We still wanted to have a performance-based event, but thought we'd have music this year instead. We will still have our comedic fundraiser, we will just alternate back and forth."

Johnson said the event will be similar to the ‘Beer and Beethoven' event that pairs a musician with Symphony Nova Scotia.

"They've always used it as a fundraiser for them, but they decided to bring it to Truro and all the proceeds will be going to the hospice society," he said. "So people will get to see J.P. Cormier with the best backing in town."

To make the evening more of an event, there will be prizes, special guests, a 50/50 draw and cash bar.

"We wanted to make it accessible to everyone because it's not just a concert, it's about creating awareness. We have two different prices - $50 tickets, and $25 tickets for those that are 19 and under, so ideally families will be able to come out. It would be advantageous to them," the co-ordinator said.

Being their biggest fundraiser of the year, Johnson said the society is hoping it will be as successful as the previous two years were. The 2012 event featuring Rick Mercer raised more than $18,000, while last year's event with Colin Mochrie brought in more than $35,000 for the society.

"We're hoping that pattern will continue and we can translate it into another success," he said. "All the hospice services are free and we don't receive any government funding. We rely on donations and our fundraisers each year."

Johnson said the society has seen great support from businesses and residents in the area who make donations, both monetary and in-kind.

For this event, he's hoping the chance to see Symphony Nova Scotia, who hasn't performed in Truro in more than 12 years, will be enticing.

"J.P. is always well received when he comes to the community, and having Symphony Nova Scotia here is exciting," said Johnson.

Tickets for the event are on sale now through various avenues - Ticket Pro online at www.ticketpro.ca, by calling 1-888-311-9090 and outlets (MacQuarries Pharmasave and the Marigold Cultural Centre). A limited number of VIP tickets are also available at $250 per ticket, which includes premiere seating, a VIP reception with the artists and a $175 tax receipt.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m.
