TRURO - Wartime developments that transformed Colchester County are the focus of a new museum exhibit in Truro.
The Colchester Historical Museum's Homefront: Colchester County during the Second World War exhibit relives historical moments from the establishment of the Debert Military Camp to the significant contributions that civilians made to Canada's war effort.
"Every year we try to do a Remembrance Day exhibit. With Debert's role in wartime it seemed like a good idea to focus on how this area was affected," said exhibit chairwoman Elinor Maher.
"During the Second World War civilians were called upon to help soldiers and those related to the war. Thousands of people (accepted) that help," she said, of the writing materials, refreshments and meals that were given to soldiers by the public.
The exhibit boasts of "hundreds" of items including wartime pictures, printed articles on the war, uniforms and artifacts. Some of the items belong to the museum while others are on loan from collectors.
For the first time, the museum will be open on Remembrance Day.
"We should be open because there will be thousands of people (out) for Remembrance Day services and this exhibit is all about Remembrance Day," said Maher.
"Families have war stories to share and young people need to be made aware of the sacrifices made by the previous
generation."
Valley's Ken Caldwell loaned more than 50 items to the exhibit.
"I've always been interested in the military even though I don't have any ties to it growing up," said Caldwell, who has a personal collection of "hundreds" of military paraphernalia. He's gathered the items from auctions, military shows and even bought some from veterans.
"I think it's important to have this exhibit because it might help prevent wars in the future by showing the destruction brought about by war. I think wars should be outlawed," said Caldwell.
On Saturday, as part of the exhibit's opening, Halifax author William Naftel discusses his book Halifax at War: Searchlights, squadrons and submarines 1939-1945. The event begins at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.
