TRURO – The winner of the first live painting competition will be featured for the month of August at the Marigold Centre Art Gallery.

Erin Jackson’s ‘Traces of Moments’ runs from Aug. 1 to 31, with an opening reception on Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Jackson was the winner of Art Battle Truro, held at the Split Crow in April.

Two years ago, Jackson felt she lost her words during a seven-day silent retreat in New York.

“When I returned to Nova Scotia, the words were replaced by colour, flashes of colour and sharp shapes that never came fully into focus or form,” she said in a press release about the upcoming exhibit. “During a conversation with a dear artist friend, I told her, ‘I think I need to paint.’”

After a few conversations, Jackson decided on acrylics and for two months, painted simple paintings of blue and black, while getting a feel for the brushes and textures.

“The nature and style of the paintings started to shift the more time I spent painting.”

The works that will be on display at the Marigold were all completed in the past year.  Some took months to finish, and others only a few hours.

“I find it difficult to express any kind of process as my experience is simply watching the colours appear,” said Jackson. “When I paint there is no sense that I am actually doing it. My mind is very still while painting and there is little awareness of my body.

“I have previously expressed that painting is akin to meditation for me. A painting is simply a captured moment. There is no meaning other than what was expressed during the actual painting experience itself. Traces of moments, that is all.”

While only painting a short time, Erin has quickly developed as an artist and cannot now envision life without it. She was unexpectedly pleased by how others have connected with her paintings.

All are welcome to stop by the opening reception.
