‘It’s an opportunity for them to come out and read their winning pieces’

TRURO – This year’s RiverWords festival will shine a spotlight on the Ada Mingo writing contest.

Chad Norman sits with the gazebo of Riverfront Park behind him. The park will be the scene of the second annual RiverWords: A Poetry and Music Festival hosted by Norman, which runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Chad Norman, who is organizing ‘RiverWords: A Poetry and Music Festival,’ had some help from the Colchester East Hants Public Library, which hosts the Ada Mingo Memorial Teen Writing Awards every year.

“At first, I would have been happy with whomever I could get from the contest,” said Norman, who organized the first RiverWords festival at the Riverfront Park last year as well. “But then I found out the contest had two different categories, so I wanted to try to have a winner from each.”

Two of those winners – Libby Schofield, who won first place in the 16 to 19 years category, and Kylee Graham, the third place winner in the same category – are on the bill for the July 13 event.

“It’s an opportunity for them to come out and read their winning pieces,” said Norman.

Rounding out the poets will be Peter Sanger, who will read from Fireship, John Stoke’s Horse, and Aiken Drum.

There will also be three musicians at the festival, which runs from 2 to 4 p.m. – Murdo Messer, Shiloh Lindsey and Dave Hayman.

“Last year was really, really good. We had about 40 people show up and that’s a capacity crowd to me,” said Norman. “I’m hoping we can build on that this year with the lineup we have.”

In hopes of keeping the festival going every year, Norman said he plans on changing up the lineup annually.

The event is free for everyone. Truro and District Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event this year, which is taking place at the park next to the bridge to Bible Hill.
