SPECIAL TO THE COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS

Senior basketball, slo-pitch and badminton players, as well as curlers, are reminded to get their registrations in right away for the Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games coming to the Truro area this September.

The deadline for some activities is June 30. This early deadline only affects some sports where organizers have to book and confirm public venues, such as gyms, clubs and fields. Those activities are: basketball, badminton, slo-pitch, ice curling and stick curling.

Some activities may be cancelled if there is not enough participation, so those interested are encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.

The deadline for all other sports and activities is Sept. 2, so there is still time to check out the schedule, pick out your favourite events, and sign up. Some of those other more than 20 activities include: darts, swimming, shuffleboard, 8-ball, cycling, running, bridge, washer toss, 45s, lawn bowling, Scrabble, crokinole, tennis, pickleball, and more.

The Colchester County region won a bid to host the games, which are held every two years. This year’s dates are Sept. 19 to 21.

Organizers are meeting every two weeks to make plans for the Games, which are anticipated to draw hundreds of participants from throughout the province for “fun, fitness and friendship.” In addition to sports and activities, the three-day event includes entertainment and social events, and a banquet.

On another, unrelated but interesting note, the Town of Truro Art Acquisition Show officially opened on Tuesday, June 4 and will run until June 28 in the McCarthy Hall Gallery on the Truro Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College. This is a joint, annual project for the Town of Truro and the Truro Art Society.

This year’s show features 16 artists and 35 works of art. One piece has been selected to be added to the town’s permanent art collection. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also of note, the Town of Truro Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is accepting registrations for its summer day camps.

Information about these and other events in Truro can be found on the town’s website at www.truro.ca.
