NEW GLAGOW – The Caledonian Scottish Fiddle Orchestra of Nova Scotia is coming to Glasgow Square Saturday, and for some of the musicians, they’ll be playing in their hometown.

Carol MacDonald from New Glasgow is one of the local musicians playing in the orchestra and she said she’s excited to play for her home audience.

“It feels great,” she said. “I hope we have a good crowd.”

MacDonald said she’s played at the deCoste Centre before but that is the only Pictou County venue the orchestra has performed at.

MacDonald has been playing the fiddle for 12 years and has played with this orchestra for six.

“I really enjoy the Scottish music,” she said. “It’s just such a pleasure.”

MacDonald is one of five Pictou County musicians in the orchestra. Judy Porter from Green Hill plays fiddle, Geoff Hunter from River John plays fiddle, Diane Brown from New Glasgow plays fiddle and Marsha Sutton from Abercrombie plays drums.

MacDonald said it’s a pleasure to play with the orchestra.

“It’s a great orchestra with great people and we have our director who is a Scotsmen,” she said.

Orchestra director Nelson Ferguson was born in Scotland and lived there, playing in several Scottish orchestras. His arrangements reflect his Scottish influence, a statement from Glasgow Square said.

The orchestra is comprised of 30 musicians who play violins, flutes, accordions, cello, bass, keyboard and drums. The musicians hale from New Glasgow, Abercrombie, Green Hill, Halifax, Truro and New Brunswick.

The orchestra has performed in many venues across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario.

MacDonald said the audience Saturday night can expect Scottish jigs, reels, slow airs and traditional toe-tapping tunes.

The Thistle Scottish Country Dancers will also perform at the concert.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Glasgow Square. Tickets can be purchased at Glasgow Square, Ticket Pro and Big Al’s at the price of $15.
